Failed predictions and the truth of the Gospel

Yesterday was another failed attempt, for man to believe in a prophecy that never originated from God.  This was a terribly feeble attempt for man to show himself superior to God, in the false prophecy of the end of the world according to the Mayan calendar.

But yet again, God's word shall stand true until He fulfills His very own word that no one knows the day or the hour of Christ's return concerning his judgment upon the world, except God himself.

A lot of jokes were made about it too.  Some of the people I work with made light of the prophecy saying they should have called ahead, to say they weren't coming to work because it was the end of the world.  I heard one guy call his wife and say that he heard the end of the world was postponed an hour.  Like that was going to give a little more comfort to them.

When I headed out for lunch, I had the most encouraging conversation with a woman I met who sees me regularly where I like to eat.

As I sat at my table waiting for my meal, she pulled up a chair, sat down and asked what my opinion was about all this end of the world stuff, a question I hadn't expected to hear her ask and nor did I expect our conversation to go the route that it did.

She knows that in addition to working at The Home Depot, I also serve as a pastor too.

I simply said to her that no man knows the day or the hour of the end of the world, except God himself, but He is coming at an hour that will be completely unexpected too and each one of us must be ready when that day comes.  (Matthew 24:36-44)

She began to say that she's not very religious, doesn't go to church at all and she said that she knows that she needs God in her life, but doesn't know where to go.  She has been approached by individuals who are Jehovah Witnesses also, hence the question that she asked, "Where do I go?", which I think was probably a question of wanting to know if Jehovah Witnesses believe the same truth of Scripture as I do, which they do not and much more can be understood concerning the Jehovah Witnesses distinct errors here.

As this woman was speaking to me and asking where does she find God and how concerned she is for her family, especially with what has happened in Newtown, CT just a week ago too, her eyes began to fill with tears.

Most people I know who are Christians will understand what I am about to say, which is, when I saw those tears falling from her eyes, it brought such a joy to my heart and soul because I knew that what was happening to her was God drawing her near to Himself as the truth of His Word was spoken to her at that moment.

I proceeded to say to her that Jesus himself said that He is the only way to God and every person must enter God's kingdom of heaven through faith alone in His Son, Jesus Christ. (John 14:6)

Every sin that she has ever committed against God, Jesus willingly became the penalty of her sin (2 Corinthians 5:17-21; Philippians 2:8), as well as mine and whoever has placed their full, faith and trust in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of their sins, also receives the gift of living eternally with Him when they die. (John 3:16-18)

When that day comes, whether it happens by a car accident, a disease that causes their death, or where God has allowed them to live a very long life and then eventually die, there is no fear in death at all, for the person who has put their faith in Jesus Christ alone to save them from God's judgment of their sin.

There are so many verses of Scripture regarding the comfort the believer has concerning being unafraid of death.  One of them is from Psalm 23:4,
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Likewise, in John's epistle, he writes,
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.  1 John 4:18
In order for any person to realize this truth for themselves, they must first repent of their sins and acknowledge such before God.  They must also then place their full faith and trust in the finished work of Jesus Christ and his death for them, which is considered God's full satisfaction of the penalty of their sin that they deserved, but instead, Jesus Christ suffered and died for your penalty of sin.  Jesus' resurrection from the dead three days later is our fulfilled promise that just as Jesus ascended to heaven to be reunited with God the Father, so too, will each born again believer be reunited with Jesus one day too.

Jesus Christ died for you, dear reader, for this woman whom I was speaking to yesterday.  Have you put your full faith and trust alone in Jesus Christ?  Does your life reflect it?

The world is coming to an end one day.  The temporary world of our lives could come to an end at any moment too and God says that it is appointed for man to die once and then comes the judgment. (Hebrews 9:27)  For anyone to play games with this concerning God's judgment that is coming is a foolish thing to do, especially when they have been made aware of their sin against God's Law.  (Hebrews 10:28-31)

I promised to send her an email regarding our service time on Sunday and where we are located, which I would like to share with you again.

First Assembly of God is located at 133 Junction Road in Brookfield, CT.  Sunday morning worship begins at 10:45 a.m. and all are welcome to attend, if you live in the Brookfield area of Connecticut.

As I look back on yesterday's conversation, I'm amazed at how God used me to be a witness for Christ and that yet another false prediction helped to brightly shine the light of God's truth upon another soul whom God loves deeply.

Please join me in praying for this woman and her family, that God's spirit would continue to draw her to Himself and that she would fully trust in Christ alone for the forgiveness of her sin and the salvation of her soul.

Faithfully in Christ,

Pastor Kurt
